Saying Go thy way

“I knew it. You always hide your cards under the table; here is the evidence. Come here, you cheater. You owe me at least five silver and blue scutes.”

There were muffled sounds of a skirmish.

Clang. Clang. Clatter.

“You think a few pots and pans will keep me from getting my scute back? Get back here,” one of the guards said.

“Hurry, they did not even look near the hole. They were too busy fighting each other. OK. That’s it, the last stone in place.

Whew. That was close,” Tarx said.

“Son, we will tug on the rope here at the front of your cart. As soon as we do this, the person on the other side will pull you out slowly. We will be right behind you. Keep your fingers in the cart. I don’t want a piece of rock to sheer off your fingertips.”

The front of the cart moved a bit. Clunk. The cart moved left to right as the person handling it worked to get it straight. As he lay down in the cart, the cart moved forward and stopped once it was perfectly horizontal.

Again, the cart jerked him, pressing the top of his head against the rear of the cart. Wheels hit bumps and then leveled out again at the constant tugging forward.

Odox lay on his side and tried to eat as much ham and bread as fast as possible. Just in case he was caught, at least he would have a full stomach.

The scent of pine trees and firs filled his nose. The bumpy cart stopped suddenly. Because he was adjusting himself in the cart, the cart’s momentum almost threw him out. The elevation change was evident when his bread rolled off his palm and landed behind him in the dark tunnel.

Sounds of birds, lots of birds, came from within the tunnel. Something warm, like a warm towel, hit him in the face.

“Hello, is anyone there?” Odox asked weakly.

“Odox, my boy, what did they do to you? I love you.”

Still sitting in the cart, he was greeted by his ma's warm embrace. She sobbed and muttered things and then sobbed again.

“Ma, I am sorry. I should -”

Another hug cut him off, and this one was a half hug.

“Odox, I am sorry. I tried to get to you, but I failed,” Lanx said.

His hands shook, and his chest tightened.

“You betrayed me. King Thaddeus said so himself, as did General Venla.”

A hand rested on his thin bony shoulder. It felt like a tree branch was resting on him.

“Odox, my brother, nay. Nay. I was captured just before you were. You must believe me. I am going to sneak you out of Drakkear today.”

His wobbly legs had trouble holding him, and he collapsed. He did not hit the ground, but two massive hands grabbed him underneath his shoulders. He was turned around and put into a bear hug.

“My son, I am so sorry this happened. I am sorry you lost your best friend.”

The burly man holding him sobbed and held him tight.
